Conventions are locations, plots, characters, props, shots are more that you expect to see in a certain genre of film because it gives the suitable atmospheric feel to the film. Some thriller conventions are: suspense, tension, excitement, cliffhangers, a protagonist overcoming obstacles and a villain driven plot where in most cases many civilians are killed or injured. Locations containing stairs and mirrors are also conventional in thriller films.
The thriller genre also has many sub-genres. Some of these are:
Action-thriller, Mystery-thriller, Horror-thriller, Crime-thriller, Supernatural thriller, Spy-thriller and Political-thriller.
